January 27th Charity knitting program, desserts and raffles

1/12/2020

Programs are held at the Mt. Pleasant Library in Pleasantville, NY.
Sit and Knit starts at 5:45 PM; the program at 7:00. Free for members. Guests welcome.
Celebrate the new year with the guild on January 27th! Desserts and coffee will be on hand and prizes will be raffled off.

The theme of the night is charity knitting and this year we are focusing on two different projects:

Star Legacy foundation

The first involves the Star Legacy Foundation which provides two identical preemie hats to families who are experiencing the tragedy of stillbirth. Knit two identical preemie hats and we will send them to the Foundation. As part of the grieving process, they give the families 2 tiny handmade preemie hats, both of which will be placed on the baby’s head. One of the hats stays on the baby’s head for burial or cremation and the other is given back to the family. Bring a pattern, yarn and needles so you can work on them that night.

Completed pairs can be brought to the February meeting as well. If you are bringing completed pairs with you to the meeting, please safety pin them together.

A pattern option is listed below.

kids kloset sweaters

The other project involves knitting sweaters for toddlers. We will provide some yarn (DK or worsted) and appropriate patterns. The patterns and the required yarn will be in kits for your convenience. Feel free to use your own favorite pattern as well. Either way, bring your own needles. The sweaters will be donated to the Kids Kloset in White Plains.

We don't expect you to finish the sweater that night! Bring the finished sweater back anytime during the winter season.

preemie hat pattern

Here is a quick pattern for a simple, rolled edge, stockinette hat using fingering weight yarn; great for sock weight leftovers.
Using either 4 or 5 size 2 double pointed needles, cast on 72 stitches and divide them between the needles.
Start knitting around being careful not to twist the stitches and knit for 4”. On the next round, begin decreasing as follows:
Round 1: *(Knit 6, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 2: *(Knit 5, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 3: *(Knit 4, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 4: *(Knit 3, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 5: *(Knit 2, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 6: *(Knit 1, knit 2 together), repeat from * around
Round 7: *(Knit 2 together), repeat from * around
You can either cut the yarn and weave in the ends or work an i-cord for a few inches and then knot it.

from the St. Bartholomew’s soup kitchen staff

We received this message from the St. Bartholomew's Soup Kitchen Staff regarding the scarves the Guild knit for the soup kitchen. We feel you all were so generous, talented and inspirational. We’ve never felt so excited about being involved in such a project. Thank you all!
-Linda and Dorothy
We passed out the scarves today, and they were a huge success. Our guests were so appreciative.
There were some scarves left over, and I gave them to the Community Ministries at Saint Bartholomew’s. I received a lovely email from the priest in charge of that ministry thanking me and saying the scarves were “fabulous”!
Everyone is so impressed with the incredible generosity and love that went into this project. I can’t thank you enough for arranging it
-Doug
